Getting Jabber is easy. Find a client (any real client will work with Jabber, Adium on the Mac is excellent, and there's a whole slew of others for various OS's) and register on a Jabber-server. Doesn't really matter which one, since they're all interconnected - although you will have to login to the one you registered on.

Some servers provide "transports" which are a neat way of connecting to other IM-services through your Jabber-account. Jabber.se provides ICQ, MSN and IRC-transport. It sets up quickly and when connected your MSN/ICQ clients will appear just as any contacts would.

And in case anyone wants to add me I'm reachable at isecore@jabber.se

I am sick and tired of failed file transfers when I try to send my own MP3 music to friends. If the transfer isn't broken, it is incredibly slow. Sending a 10 megabyte MP3 file between two people who both have 10+ megabit connections should not take 4 minutes... Hello, dear Microsoft, it is MY OWN DAMN MUSIC! No need to screen it, you'll probably not like it anyway!

Mind said that someone needs to take that first step. I'd be happy to do it. Help me set up a good alternative and I'm on my way there soon! I was hoping for facebook to provide that better option, but the facebook chat turned out to be brown and smelly so far... ICQ is out of the question for me since many years, but I'm open to just about anything else as long as it works on PC and Adium can handle it for the mac.

As for the MSN-client censoring... yeah, it's amazingly annoying. Can't send an MP3 because it "might contain a virus", can't send a gif-image, can't do this, can't do that. Why even have these functions if you're just going to cripple them?

I've only been using Jabber for a few hours now, and already I like it more than ICQ/MSN. Additionally, since a lot of Jabber-servers have transport for MSN/ICQ it's painless to use those as well. So, it's jabber for me from now on.

I'll keep my old ICQ/MSN-lists and accounts going, but I'm not going to add any more people to them. If you want to chat with me, get a Jabber-account. I registered at Jabber.se and they have ICQ/MSN transport. Works flawless albeit a bit confusing in the beginning.

I dislike how MSN censor random things now and then, or, they are not random of course but since the censorship-filter is poor it feels like random. I stopped using MSN just before the incident with the avatar exploit that allowed trojans and viruses to spread trough the avatar-picture. And that incident did not do too well to convince me otherwise =). Unfortunately I still use the MSN protocol. I am considering if I should abandon the MSN protocol as well. I mean, someone has to take the first step, might as well be me, I have no fear of change or being radical sometimes. If they canīt contact me on msn, to hell with it, phone me or it wasnīt that important.

Yeah, right. I don't believe a single second that it was just some kind of "accident" that they included their messaging utility with their OS and it just happened to grow like crazy. Probably the same way it was a "fluke" that MS forced Internot Exploder on users and whoops, all of a sudden it killed Netscape.

There are no coincidences when it comes to Microsoft.

As for offline messaging, seemingly it doesn't work. Probably because every new version of the MSN-protocol has to be painstakingly reverse-engineered for third-party clients. Again, no surprise. Microsoft is known for maintaining undocumented "features" for their own advantage.

I think MSN was unintentional.. Messenger in win 2k was just basic utility and with XP people found out about it more and more, and now we got Live messenger.

Does that jabberthingy let you reply to offline msn users, or is it still like Miranda/pidgin?

Digsby is nice, it is a standalone program like Miranda but you register on their page, and add msn/icq/jabber to the account and then you get a digsby logon and password. The nice thing about this is that you get a roaming profile, if i change appearance and contacts it syncs to the other computer. But privacy might be a issue, and still no offline msn capability.

Well, I've practically transitioned to Jabber now. I registered an account at Jabber.se and they provide MSN/ICQ gateways which at first was confusing but now make sense.

I log into my Jabber account and boom, my MSN/ICQ-contacts also show up in the list and work just as usual.

And yeah, you go where the people is, sadly Microsoft uses it's monopoly to force people over onto MSN. Nothing new there, they'll keep doing it as long as people allow them to.

Agree, MSN is inferior to all other protocols (both in function and ability). Miranda has limited offline messaging capability but still has problems, for instance when people insist on using "invisible" on MSN, what happens then is that people write, pop up on my contact list as online then 30 sec later go offline again.. and if i don't message the person right then, you get an error. So it blows. MSN Live messenger is a bog to use esp. when you have limited RAM (getting the contact list when it has been minimated for a long time can take almost a minute when the ram is 95% used on a XP machine).

but the sad part is, either i use MSN or i don't chat with anyone. Only got 3 people on ICQ and that's Anders, Johanna and micke, and all of em got MSN as well. I see myself use icq less and less, despite it being a superior protocol. And since AIM took over you can use e-mail addresses as well as numbers to share your ID and thus comparable to MSN.

Jabber is much better since it's (more) open then both icq and msn, gmail uses it and everyone can set up their own jabber server.

But i don't see myself converting to something else, MSN is sadly here to stay as i currently have over 30 people on MSN, which 10-15 is people i regular contact, and my GF only has MSN and nothing else (so forcing her and all her friends to change would mean utter doom!).
