Conspiracy Theory

Posted by isecore on July 18th, 2008

Anyone remember Jerry Fletcher? He was the main character of Conspiracy Theory, a surprisingly good movie that was released back in 1997. Jerry was extremely paranoid, obsessed with Cather in the Rye, and every day he scanned the news trying to figure out the ways we were all being screwed.

I realized a few minutes ago that in a way, I’ve become just like Jerry.

Instead of reading the news and accepting what’s written there as truth, I’ve become so distrustful of both our fearless leaders as well as media in general that I no longer read the news. Instead, I scan through it trying to figure out what’s really going on, and in what way are we being lied to and cheated today.

See, most people live under the illusion that media is there to expose injustice and call out the politicians when they try to pull a fast one on us the people. I sadly realized a few years back that this was simply a naive illusion. Instead, media had slowly morphed into a mouthpiece for politicians, and that it was much more profitable to simply report everything at face value. Even worse, a lot of our beloved media today are more interested in simply pushing the latest celebrity-gossip or having us worry about a thousand different useless things, rather than actually doing what media traditionally does.

And this scares the Jerry Fletcher inside of me. Because I want to be able to trust the people elected to lead me. I want to trust the media that prints news. I want to believe that I live in the best possible world, created by people interested in creating a great place to be a human.

But there isn’t a single shred of evidence indicating this to be truth. Instead, I have less faith than ever before in my leaders, and what little trust I had in the media has dwindled and disappeared the last three-four years or so.

The worst thing about this is you can’t tell it to people. Either they have realized it themselves, or they take you for a paranoid loonitic (haha! spelling…)

And how am I to know when I have crossed over to the paranoid side if even the talk of suspision that newspapers are lying rendes a worried expression on my mothers face?

Just because I am paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get me… =)

Yeah, about this. I just read the leaked list of ordinary people who is being monitored. I turns out one of them is a friend of my fathers, or rather, used to be friend. They do not see each other any more, it goes a long way back but I can bet on that they are listening in on my father as well just because he USED to hang out with him in the past. It’s written down somewhere on a paper or in a file, I can guarantee it. I know this person, he has his odd sides but he is definately no terrorist or anything like that. His only crime it seems was to go on a business trip to russia. Apparently everyone that has been to Russia is probably being monitored. And…. that brings me full circle to you. You have been in Russia, hell, half of my circle of friends have been to Russia at some point or another. It’s downright scary this is.

This is like the FRA debate, there is one publicly discussed side in the media and then there are what most people with half a head believes. We havent had a single terrorist threat to sweden in years. We have allmost no military force left and are still dismantling our defences.

Based on past documents and behaviour of the US they use their foreign intelligence for business espionage pretty extensively. Especially for defence contracts where there is no doubt that even Swedish weapons industry has been had and breached.

Im pretty sure that this is one of the reasons that there arent any demand for suspicion of future or past crimes to be able to eavesdrop in the current FRA laws. A law that explicitly narrows down spying to serious things like terrorism, eminent threats, organized crime and counter-intelligence would make the intended use of the new powers of FRA impossible.

The thing im most worried about is that we work together with a country that uses torture, state terrorism, breaches every war convention ever signed, spies on its allies, supports terrorists where it fits them, overturn democratic governments and are about to collapse on itself pretty soon if it doesnt turn around on a dime and change away from a fascist state to a democratic one.

Where are our media in all this? Why they are off to more important things like covering the latest hot reality soap. The world, who cares!
