As long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed taking close-up photos of objects and subjects, and I have always tried hard to get that sense of a very short depth-of-field where you see something, and the background quickly becomes a blur. As long as I’ve owned a digital camera I have been frustrated by how difficult it was to recreate what I saw in my head with the camera. I knew that this limitation came from owning small compact-cameras with limited optics, but I still persisted.

With my new DSLR it’s quite easy to achieve, even with the kitzoom included with the camera. With my 50mm/1.8f “Plastic Fantastic” it’s very easy to achieve.

The other day I was lying in bed and admiring the strands of hair on my girlfriends shoulder, when I realized that my love for this type of composition probably stems from my own limited vision. I have glasses, and without them, I am quite incredibly near-sighted. I see things very sharply when I have them close to my face, but everything at a greater distance than about 2 dm from my face becomes a blur.

So while I lay there, admiring this strand of hair I started thinking about how it was the perfect photo for me. Close-up, with a quick blurring of the background. Could it be that this preference in photography had it’s roots in my limited vision? It’s an interesting thought.

Sure, I thought they were a little neat, but I also knew that if I had something like that at home I would quickly start getting annoyed with it. I’m more of a “less is more” type person, and I always think that form should follow function and not the other way around.

Which leads me to light pollution. No, not that type of light, but rather the pollution of many illumination sources.

Because I have several sources of light pollution at home, and I try to minimize them as much as possible. When I call it quits for the day, I want my apartment to be dark. I don’t like unnecessary LEDs or illumination to pollute my nice, quiet and dark apartment.

I built my computer into a case with only one LED, and even that is too much which is why I tend to cover it up. I’m considering unplugging it. I don’t need a blue LED to tell me my computer is on – I know when my computer is turned on, thankyouverymuch.

My keyboard is a Logitech Illuminated, which thankfully has a button to disable the illumination. My mouse is a Razer that has a well-lit and admittedly cool-looking blue illuminated scroll-wheel. This LED can be turned off in the driver, which unfortunately only works for Windows users. I tend to just cover the mouse with something when I leave the computer for the night.

Not to mention the other LEDs around my apartment. A small glowy red thing on my receiver, the two white ones on my WDTV Live and the annoyingly bright blue one on my flatscreen when it’s in standby. The numerous LEDs on my network switch and IP-phonebox. The red/green combo on the back of my subwoofer, red when it’s in standby and green when it has a signal. And so forth and so on.

Most of these I can ignore since they’re fairly subtle. The one on the flatscreen is an exception, it’s blue and surprisingly bright. It only shines when the television is turned off, which I think is a bit ironic – I know it’s turned off, why do I need a blue LED to inform me of that?

Which leads me to the point of whining about light pollution in my home.

Yesterday I bought a set of three strips of LED lights. In my case I wanted to put them behind my flatscreen and provide some nice cozy illumination in an otherwise rather dark part of my living-room. Because, even though I dislike unnecessary lights, I do like lighting as a part of interior decorating.

The results were quite lovely, and it was a cheap purchase that enhanced the quality of my living-room quite nicely.

Except for one thing.

The switch to turn on power to the LEDs is a translucent plastic thing. And when the lights are turned off, the switch itself has a blue LED that turns on. What the hell? It’s as if someone felt that when I turn off one set of lights, I should want another one to turn on instead. As you can see in the below provided photo it’s really, really bright.

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Yes, thank you. I KNOW the lights are turned off, I don’t need some bright-ass LED to inform me of this.

Update: The other day I disassembled the above-mentioned light-switch. I was planning on simply removing the LED, but it turned out that the switch actually needed it to function. I could’ve replaced the whole switch, but instead I solved it ghetto-style – I wrapped the bright blue LED in two layers of duct-tape. After this surgery the switch still glows, but at only a fraction of the brightness from before.

But occasionally I find things that are funny, smart and would work. The funky baroque outdoor chairs are examples of that. Here’s another one.

This is a new take on the old dishrack, and I think it’s really clever. Whenever I have to handwash any dishes I often tend to get annoyed by the inflexibility of unmodular dishracks. They can’t be reconfigured and they only work in a certain way or setting. This one changes that, and I think it’s quite smart.

Now, where can I buy one?

I want two for my balcony, preferably in some absolutely garish color, and preferably with a matching small table to put my Victorian lamp on. Then I’m gonna sit in one of them babies wearing a Hugh Hefner-type bathrobe/smoking jacket and puff on a huge cigar!

Maybe some day when I redo my kitchen I’ll steal this idea and do a pixelart tile motif in it somewhere…

However, this clock I actually like. It’s just simple digital (duh) digits. The neat thing about them is that they’re OLED, and in sunlight they’re black and in darkness they’re white. Don’t get it? Look at the picture below.

I like minimalist type designs, and as such this appeals to me. Currently the clock isn’t in production but if it starts being produced and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg I could consider buying one.

Linda gav mig i uppdrag att klura på födelsedagspresenter. Två av de blygsammare önskemålen är antingen en ny smörgåsgrill (den jag har nu håller på att falla i bitar) eller en fritös (så jag kan göra Tonkatsu eller Pizza Fritta) men för en stund sen kom jag på en tredje.

Den är dock för de som är stadd vid ganska ordentlig kassa, men det är ett genuint önskemål.

Om någon skulle vilja köpa en Philips LivingColors-lampa till mig i present skulle jag bli äckligt glad! Jag har varit förtjust i konceptet ända sedan de först dök upp för nåt år sen, och jag tycker det är ett supermysigt koncept. Jag är lite dimmig på var man kan hitta den, men nånstans borde den ju finnas.

För ett tag sen gnällde jag över avsaknad av hyllor. Jag kom fram till att Lack från pålitliga och ekonomiska IKEA var det bästa valet, och sen gnällde jag över att det inte finns nån IKEA här i stan. Min vän Ida erbjöd sig att köpa nästa gång hon var i närheten av IKEA, och tack vare henne har jag nu åtta stycken Lack-hyllor som jag ska distribuera på lämpligt vis runt min lägenhet.

Jag valde den svarta hyllan, det verkade vara den färg som funkade bäst i mitt latte-färgade vardagsrum. Den vita var snygg, men inte tillräckligt diskret. Den röda var för… tja, röd. Helt enkelt.

Det som slog mig dock igår kväll efter att jag fått hem dessa åtta hyllor var att de ser ut som nerskalade versioner av monoliten från Stanleys klassiska mästerverk “2001: A Space Odyssey”. När de står på högkant ser de oroväckande lika ut.

Jag var på vippen att arrangera alla åtta lite snyggt, men jag var för lat. Plus, det kändes onödigt att ta ur alla åtta ur förpackningarna bara för det. Ni får nöja er med den jag redan öppnat. Lägg märke till fingeravtrycken också. Hyllorna är mycket svartare i verkligheten, kunde inte få till en bra bild utan blixt så därför blev den lite grå.

Jag vill ha en 6-7 hyllor tror jag. Två av hyllorna ska monteras i hörnen på mitt vardagsrum och bära upp mina bakre surroundhögtalare. Sen vill jag ha en bunt med hyllor, några som kan monteras på väggen nära mitt skrivbord så kan jag flytta upp lavalampan och div annat från min skrivbordsyta. De som blir över vill jag sätta nära TV’n så jag kan pryda den väggen lite, t.ex. med några gamla Lagoona-foton.

Men det är apsvårt att hitta hyllor. De ska inte vara stora, storlek mellan 20-30 cm och de ska vara ganska (eller helst helt) kvadratiska. Jag har sökt på Clas Ohlson, Rusta, Jysk, Jula och en bunt med andra affärer.

De få som finns är:

* För dyra – 99+ kronor för en liten skiva trä? Come on! Jag har sett några små träplattor som kostade 200 kronor! Vem är jag, Ernst Kirchsteiger? Jag är inte gjord av pengar.

* Har skitfula monteringsanordningar. Vem i hela hälsingland vill montera en liten vägghylla med en konsoll som är större än hyllan själv, och så fylld med snickarglädje att t.o.m. en dalahäst blir vimmelkantig? Eller nåt plåtschabrak som ser mer ut att höra hemma i ett polskt koncentrationsläger än en inredningsbutik.

* Variant: Hörnhyllor som måste monteras på båda väggarna. Det går inte för mig. Jag kan inte borra i betong.

* Har asfula färger. Jag vill inte ha nån jäkla fejkfuru eller ekfanér eller vad annan galenskap de kan komma på. Jag vill ha en enkel, diskret grundfärg.

Faktiskt den enda hyllan som uppfyller mina önskemål är lågmälda och billiga Lack från IKEA. Den ser ut som jag vill ha, kostar rimligt pris (en femtiolapp per hylla) och har inte alltför disgusting färger samt har infälld montering. Jag lutar mellan svart eller vit. Den röda ser lite för horhusig ut för min smak, samt skär sig med mina latte-färgade väggar.

Enda problemet är såklart att IKEA bara säljer den i sina varuhus, och närmaste varuhus för mig är i himla Sundsvall. Varuhuset hade lika gärna kunnat stå på månen för all den tillgänglighet det har för mig som saknar bil.

Om du är i Umeå och är intresserad av datorer och öppna filosofier, samt har ett visst sinne för humor och är öppen för udda intryck rekommenderar jag ett besök. Jag fann utställningen enormt stimulerande, och jag tänkte mycket på hur just broderi-mönster är ett slags öppen källkod som distribueras fritt och tillåts att ändras. Mycket intressant.

Min personliga favorit var när man tagit ASCII-loggor från olika ställen inom Warez-scenen och broderat dem som ett slags tavla. Jag smygtog ett foto på en av dem, trots att man egentligen inte fick fotografera – det var bara så himla fräckt. Jag hade gärna haft nåt liknande på min vägg.

En del saker var deltagande. T.ex. kunde man med sin mobiltelefon fotografera en brodyr och sen använda en applikation för att dechiffrera den, och få en länk till en hemsida. Det enda som störde mig var att applikationen enbart fanns tillgänglig för iPhone, vilket jag tyckte skar sig rätt ordentligt med konceptet om deltagarkultur när applikationen enbart fanns för en plattform. Icke desto mindre var det lite coolt. Man kunde även sätta sin bluetooth-utrustade enhet att ta emot filer och få en slumpmässigt genererad liten glyph skickad till sig.

Men innan vi gick runt på bildmuséet såg vi ett par grisar som låg och trynade i sommarsolen. Klart mysigt.
